Newsweek has provided details on the cancelation by the Justice department of a summer Muslim outreach event to have featured Attorney General Alberto Gonzales after discovering that one of the invited guests was an officer of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), just named as an unindicted coconspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case. The report points to tensions within the department’™s civil-rights division which organized the event and the criminal division’™s counterterrorism division which is conducting the prosecution and also cites efforts on the part of ISNA and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) to contest their designation as unindicted coconspirators and as part of the US Muslim Brotherhood. Both groups have seen increasing recognition in recent years by various government agencies, including the FBI and time will tell as to whether or not the recent revelations coming from the Holy Land trial will reverse this trend.
