MIDEAST CRISIS: White House Leaves Door Open For Contact To Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood

0

The Washington Post is reporting that the White House has no current contact with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood but appears to be leaving the door open for such contact in the future. According to the report:

Thee White House says the Obama administration has had no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood, the deeply conservative Islamic organization that constitutes the biggest organized opposition group in Egypt. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Monday that before dealing with opposition groups the administration would want assurances that they adhere to the law, that they are non-violent and that they are willing to be part of a democratic process. Gibbs said there would be no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt unless those assurances were offered.

It should be noted that the Muslim Brotherhood today has become a global network and that the Egyptian mother branch is not necessarily the most important part of the movement. Sheikh Youssef Qaradawi, close to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, is often referred to by the GMBDW as the most important leader of the global Muslim Brotherhood, an acknowledgement of his role as the de facto spiritual leader of the movement. In 2004, Qaradawi turned down the offer to lead the Egyptian Brotherhood after the death of the Supreme Guide.
