Egyptian media is reporting that official have confiscated the funds of well-known Global Muslim Brotherhood figures such as Youssef Qaradawi and Wagdi Ghoneim as well those of other Brotherhood individuals and entities.. According to a report in the Egyptian Independent:
May 13, 2014 Chancellor Wadie Hanna, secretary general of the commission assessing the funds of the Muslim Brotherhood members, said that Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Wagdi Ghoneim and Ahmed Mansour are among those whose funds have been confiscated recently.
Hanna told Al-Tahrir channel on Monday that the commission took the names from the 76 Brotherhood Association members that are formally mentioned in the its membership list. Meanwhile. Commission Chairman Ezzat Khamis said that the commission confiscated funds of 30 other Brotherhood members, 12 Brotherhood associations and five Brotherhood companies. ‘We take their names from security reports because it is a secret group,’ he explained.”
The extent of the funds involved was not disclosed.
Wagdy Ghoneim is an Egyptian cleric known for his anti-Semitic speeches. In September 2013, the GMBDW reported that Ghoneim was among fourteen defendants charged by Egyptian authorities in connection with clashes that took place last December in front of Al-Itihidaya presidential palace in Cairo. In April we reported that he had met in Khartoum with Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood figure Hassan al-Turabi.
Youssef Qaradawi is the most important leader of the Global Muslim Brotherhood and is the de facto spiritual leader of the movement.
